At a certain stage of its development, any society uses corporal punishment as a natural method of regulating social life. What may seem nonsensical to a modern person was considered the norm for our ancestors, regardless of their social group or material status. However, in every state, there comes a moment when corporal punishment becomes inappropriate. This fundamental study, one of the best on this topic, extensively explores the system of criminal and administrative law from Kievan Rus' to the beginning of the 20th century. Largely avoiding lengthy discussions on changing morals and ethics, the author examines issues related to the use of corporal punishment, torture, and torment at different stages of Russian history, drawing on an extensive source base - monographs, articles, and legislative documents. This publication is aimed at specialists and students in historical, legal, anthropological, and cultural studies, as well as all readers interested in history.
