Since February 1943, the war began to be inclined not in favor of the Third Reich, Germany’s human resources were melting, and in September 1944, Hitler issued a decree on the creation of a Volkssturm - the People’s Army - the last remedy of doomed. Despite his previous status of an important rear person, Hans Til fell under the draft in the ranks of the Volkssturm. It was assumed that the soldiers of these formations would be protected only by those areas in which they lived, but many of them, including the author of the memoirs, were bogged down on the Eastern Front. Tilya’s military path turned out to be short -lived, but he had a complete spoon to sip from the boiler of soldier"s life: brutal fights in Pomerania and East Prussia, chaos of a disastrous evacuation of refugees, surgery to save them and hatred of criminally irresponsible Nazi propaganda. Most of all, Hans Til was afraid of Russian captivity, but fell into the hands of the Polish authorities and experienced all the hardships of the existence of a camp prisoner
