The name of Wallenstein is known even to those who quite vaguely imagine the history of the thirty -year war. Indeed, the biography of this commander is read as an exciting adventure novel. In his life there was everything - a dizzying take -off, intrigue, victory and defeat, and, finally, tragic death. No wonder the great German poet Friedrich Schiller devoted one of his main works to Wallenstein. To date, the issue of evaluating the personality and the activities of this "ideal mercenary" remains very controversial. Was he simply an unprincipled combuster of glory and wealth - or a talented politician who could direct the development of Germany along a different path?
