The work of John Armstrong, a well -known Sovietologist and Ukrainologist, is a documented history of Ukrainian nationalism from the Second World War. The author presented in detail the various social elements of the nationalist movement, traced the struggle within its groups and the activities of their leaders in the political atmosphere of those years. He in a deep analysis of the nature of this phenomenon, its spread in various parts of Ukraine, the features of manifestation during the period of German occupation and sources of survivability, and also showed how it was transformed under the influence of the environment in which it originated. He also affected extreme forms of nationalism - aggression and atrocities regarding the civilian population in a pursuit of race.
The book is especially interesting in that it is based on numerous little -known sources: archival materials, memoirs, articles that are so eloquent that readers make their own comparisons and conclusions regarding the phenomenon of Ukrainian nationalism
