The book of the Belarusian Medievist historian Alexei Viktorovich Martynyuk is devoted to Austria’s relations with East Europe to the embassies of Sisigmund Herberstein in 1517 and 1526. "Notes about Muscovy" Herberstein, first published in 1549 in Vienna, laid the foundation for the Rossica genre in European literature and for several centuries predetermined the perception of Russia and Eastern Europe as a whole. However, Herberstein"s diplomatic missions were far from the first contacts of Autria with this region. The Austrian duchy played an important role in the political system of the Holy Roman Empire and had its own tradition of relations with the lands on the eastern border of the Latin world. The book explore these contacts in different historical eras: in the dramatic time of the "crisis of medieval Russia" in the XIII century, when the Russian princes found themselves outside the native earth, including in Austria, in the era of the Crusades against the “pagans and schismatics" in the XIV century in the XIV century , during the period of the scientist "discovery of Eastern Europe" in the 15th century.
