This book covers the extensive period of the history of the Byzantine Empire from the reign of the Komnin dynasty to the fall of Constantinople in 1204. In the center of the story is the figure of Emperor Alexei I, whom contemporaries called the thirteenth apostle, as well as its activities to restore the integrity of Byzantium and eliminate the deadly threat from Turks and Pechenegs at the end of the XI century. Much attention is also paid to the kingdom of his successors to John II Komnin and Manuel I Komnin.
