The work considers the history of hostilities in the Baltic region during the Northern War. They were mainly conducted around the fortresses, and Russian troops in 1702-1710. They captured the fortifications of NERBERBURG, NIANSHANIAN, NARVA, Derpt, Vyborg, Kexholm, Riga, Perenov and Revel. All these fortresses were included in the defense system of the northwestern borders of Russia (naturally, after the siege, repair work was carried out) The history of siege operations has already been considered in domestic historiography, so here the main task of the author was the systematization of the accumulated data (at the same time, new information is given) In more detail (based on archival materials), the principles of folding, formation and expansion of the defense system of the North-West are understood. This system on the eve of the war consisted of the old tower fortresses of Novgorod, Pskov and Ladoga. At that time, there was a transition from tower fortifications to the bastional, and in the first years of the war, wood-earth bastions were poured around the old fortifications
