For the first time in Russian science, the book explores reports, notes, diaries and memoirs of Russian and Western travelers who visited Mongolia in the XVII - early XX centuries, as sources of information about traditional statehood and the law of the Mongols. Among the authors of the notes are diplomats and scouts, scientists and merchants, missionaries and even "extreme tourists", which made it possible to form an idea of the most diverse sides of state -lilac and legal relations in Mongolia. Various goals of trips led to the visits of foreign contemporaries to different regons of Mongolia at different stages of their development. The analysis of these sources allows you to form the "legal map" of Mongolia during the period of independent khanates and staying under the rule of the Manchu Dynasty of Qing, including the peculiarities of the legal status of various regions - Northern Mongolia (Halhi), the southern (internal) Mongolia and existing until the middle of the XVIII century. Independent Dzungarian Khanate. As part of the study, about 200 texts compiled by travelers were analyzed, additional materials on the history of foreign travels in Mongolia and the personalities of the travelers themselves were also studied, which allowed to form an objective attitude to notes and critically analyze them.
The book is intended for lawyers in the field of state history and law, comparative law, legal and political anthropology, historians, Mongolians, sources, political scientists, ethnographers, and can also serve as additional material for students studying these specialties
