In 476, the commander of the Roman army, Odoacr, captured and executed the father and uncle of the emperor - then the child - Romulus Augustula and sent the imperial regalia to Constantinople. It was a mortal blow for the Western Roman Empire. Peter Heiser, a professor of history of the Middle Ages, talks about three applicants for the throne who tried to revive the Roman heritage in Western Europe - Theodorich, Justinian and Charles the Great. The author shows that the old Roman empire created by conquests could not be preserved in New Europe at the beginning of the Middle Ages. And only when the clergy from the Barbarian North updated the institution of the papacy, it became possible to realize the real restoration of imperial power. This new Roman Empire, created by the barbarians, has been over a thousand years old
