The next volume of the annual “ancient states of Eastern Europe” is dedicated to early forms and functions of writing in antiquity and the Middle Ages. The central problem of Tom - a letter and the formation of statehood - is considered on the material of a number of society and the Middle Ages, including ancient Russia. Other plots are also understood related to the early functions of writing and the ratio of oral and written practices at different stages of the formation of a written culture, sources that are fundamentally important for understanding the early history of writing in a number of regions are studied and published.
