From the author
For a long time, Russian fine art was oriented exclusively on the church. When the first secular works appear in the XVII century, they are, first of all, portraits of monarchs. It is the sovereign - the anointed of God - the first of the living was awarded to keep his visible image.

With the coming to power of Peter I, art has experienced a strong influence of personal tastes and preferences of the monarch. Since then, the official portraits of the rulers of the Russian Empire have become the symbolic images of their military and political successes. The image of the monarch was served in a positive way, and the style of work could change depending on fashion trends.

For example, portraits of Catherine II were traditionally created in the style of classicism, but in 1794 Vladimir Borovikovsky wrote a chamber portrait of the empress, depicting her in the form of an elderly woman in a cap in a park. The work was completed in the spirit of a new direction of sentimentalism, but Catherine did not appreciate it, perhaps not wanting to see herself outside the tradition of the front portrait.

At the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, in the wake of interest in national history, Russian artists turn to the images of the monarchs of past eras. Now the images of kings - for example, Ivan the Terrible and Peter I - become more complex and voluminous. In the paintings, the personality and character of the ruler are revealed, he appears to the audience not just as a historical figure, but as a living person.
