Pavel Dmitrievich Bryantsev taught history for several years in one of the secondary educational institutions and noticed with what attention the students listen to the explanations of those departments of Russian history that relate to Lithuania and its relations to Poland and Russia. Due to interest in this topic and the lack of the necessary sources, the Bryantsev decided to write the history of the Lithuanian state. He was engaged in this composition for seven years: he revised many sources and manuals, chose from them only the most important and significant events and combined them into one general picture of the history of the Lithuanian state
