The liberation of Kalinin was the result of a fierce twelve -day battle in December 1941. Unlike an almost two -month defensive operation, the offensive of the Kalinin Front troops did not differ in the rapid raids of tank brigades, oncoming mobile battles and the struggle for an airfield node with the massive use of aviation. For the offensive operation, stubborn battles in numerous settlements turned into strong defense units, a heavy positional confrontation in city quarters, as well as daily routine events at the front and in the rear, on which the outcome of the operation, turned into a strong.
The December battle for Kalinin once again showed that war is, first of all, hard work. Having cracked the defense of the 9th Field Army of the Wehrmacht, the units and formations of the Kalinin Front slowly but surely destroyed the enemy’s strongholds, grinded its reserves, literally clung to bridgeheads on the southern coast of the Volga, recoving the counterattacks of infantry and assault guns. Despite the breakdowns of the planned pace of offensive, as a result of the actions of the Soviet troops, a large transport hub and an important industrial center were liberated, and the front line began to rapidly shift to the west
