This period is divided by Dubnov into two eras of emancipation (1789th-1815th and 1848th-1880) and two eras of reaction (1815th-1848 and 1881th-1914) The books highlight many episodes of little-, or even completely unknown to the Russian-speaking reader. For example, a wave of Jewish pogroms, known for the "Hep-Hep", the role of Jews in the revolutions of 1848 and the protection of the West Ukrainian People’s Republic that existed in 1918-M-1919, is signed in detail. The occurrence of Zionism is described in detail. Semen Markovich (Shimen Meerovich) Dubnov (also Simon Dubnov, 1860 - 1941) - Historist, publicist and public figure, one of the classics and creators of the scientific history of the Jewish people. He wrote in Russian and in Yiddish. In 1922 he emigrated to Germany, in 1933 he moved to Latvia. Here he completed - the ten -volume history of the Jewish people.
