In 1829, Emperor Nicholas I took over the title of the Polish king, conducting a coronation in Warsaw, the capital of the Kingdom of Poland. Thus, he fulfilled one of the provisions of the Constitution granted by Poland by his older brother and predecessor on the throne Alexander I. Warsaw action became a unique event in Russian history: neither before nor after the Russian monarchs was crowned like the Polish king. Nicholas I was a man of conservative views and the decision of Alexander I did not support special rights to Poland. However, after long thoughts, doubts and contrary to his beliefs, he decided to conduct a coronation. In the book of Ekaterina Boltunova, the history of preparation and coronation becomes a reason for thinking about choosing a Russian political strategy on the western borders of the empire and the mental attitudes of the imperial elite of the first third of the 19th century. Ekaterina Boltunova - candidate of historical sciences, professor of the National Research University "Higher School of Economics" (Higher School of Economics), head of the Laboratory of Regional History of Russia of the Higher School of Economics
