The fundamental work of the Russian historian, the Tobolsk and Vilna governor D.N. Bantysh-Kamensky on the history of small Russia has not been reprinted since its first publication. The book is especially valuable in that it is made on the material of a huge number of little -known, often later lost sources, based on verified historical facts, and gives a detailed and systematic picture of Little Russian history. Being the ruler of the office under Prince N.G. Repnine (military governor of Little Russia), the author carefully studied this region, visited many of its lands, described commemorative places and areas of the small Russia, which he visited, Chigirin, Saturday, the ruins of Khmelnitsky’s house. Working in the archives of Poltava and Chernigov, the author had the opportunity to get acquainted with rare documents, received many chronicles and letters from local landowners. In addition, he took advantage of the work of his father N.N. Bantysh-Kamensky on the history of Little Russia, documents of the Moscow Archive, Miller"s portfolios, archives of the Little Russian College and Prince N.G. Repnin.
The first part of the work of D.N. Bantysh-Kamensky includes a description of the events of the period from the placement of the Slavs in Little Russia to its annexation in 1654 to the Russian state.
The second part of the work of D.N. Bantysh-Kamensky is devoted to the description of the events of the period of entering Little Russia into the Russian state.
The publication is addressed to specialists in the history of Russia and Europe, political scientists, sociologists, teachers and students of universities, as well as a wide range of readers
