The greatest fame of Lyionel Robbins (1898–1984) brought his work on economic theory, methodology and analysis of economic policy. During the Second World War, he headed the economic part of the office of Winston Churchill, and after its completion, he led the Financial Times for a long time. As a historian of economic ideas, he can be compared with Joseph Schupeter. The published lectures, which were read at the London School of Economics in 1979-1981 and recorded on the tape recorder by the grandson of Robbins, show his deep knowledge of the history of economic thought, infectious enthusiasm for the subject, eloquence and wit. The lectures highlight the economic ideas of many thinkers, starting with Plato, Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas. Robbins dwells in detail at the works of Adam Smith, Thomas Maltus, representatives of classical political economy, Karl Marx and Alfred Marshall. Lectures are united by Robbin"s conviction that modern institutions and social sciences cannot be really understood without awareness of the ideas that stood behind their development
