Clifford Faust, professor at the University of North Carolina, comprehensively covers the history of the establishment of trade and diplomatic relations of the two great empires after the signing of the Kyakhta treaty. The author tells how state monopolies acted, which goods were considered strategic and how the permission of private trade influenced the development of Eastern Siberia and the economy of the state as a whole. Professor Faust notes that Russian merchants possessed not only foresightedness and business estimates, but also knew a special approach taking into account the national character traits of the eastern person, which, in unusually difficult conditions of conducting business, made it possible to invariably make diplomatic relations as with the indigenous population of the border , and with the official authorities of the Middle Kingdom. Summing up, the historian reports that the increase in trade with China gave an impetus to the development of entrepreneurial activity in Russia, and customs fees from private border trade became the main source of cash receipts to the state treasury
