The book is dedicated to one of the most poorly studied periods of the history of Britain - between the departure from this territory of the Roman legions at the beginning of the 5th century. and the arrival of Christian missionaries at the end of the VI century, when the kingdoms of early medieval Britain formed. This time is also called the time of King Arthur. The legend of King Arthur, the leaders of the Britons of the 5th-7th centuries, defeating the conquerors-Saxons and who created the society of the knights of the round table, everyone heard, but the specialists still did not come to a consensus about whether the historical prototype of Arthur existed. Most researchers believe that the stories that narrated about him owe their origin to the activities of some other king, and offer many versions. Max Adams leaves such discussions beyond brackets and sets a goal to show the era as a whole on historical material, and not on the basis of myths.
