Gaston Buasier (1823-1908), an outstanding French researcher of antiquity, who had brilliant talents of a writer, historian and teacher, made a significant contribution to the development of the history of ancient Rome. Inherent in its numerous works, a deep analysis and a large -scale reconstruction of the life of Roman society and in our time are of great scientific interest.
The book proposed to the reader is the second great composition of Boisier and is a chronologically continuation of his work Roman religion from August to Antonins. The researcher turns to the final phase of the religious history of the ancient world - the fall of paganism. Boisier pays the main attention to the key events and figures of the age of Konstantin the Great. The author’s view equally covers all the phenomena of the then religious life - both leaving paganism and triumphant Christianity. The characteristic of one of the last outstanding defenders of the ancient worldview of Simmakh is adjacent to the review of the preaching and literary activities of the great Latin teachers of the Church - Ambrose of the Mediolansky and Blessed Augustine. In turn, a description of the religious policy of the defenders of the new faith, in particular Emperor Constantine, does not exclude the subsequent appeal to the affairs and personality of Julian the apostate
