The aim of the study is to clarify the methods and forms of self-identification and self-organization of the generic corporations of the Russian nobility of the XVII-XIX centuries, the functions of the coat of arms in this practice. The formation of corporations occurred around the idea of origin from a common ancestor and involved the development of genealogy legends with subsequent development, legal justification and approval by higher authority, and was expressed in the creation of a complex of written, visual and material monuments, called up as clearly and convincingly justify and represent the high social status of a representative of the corporation . O.I. Khoruzhenko for the first time systematically studied large complexes of sources of various types and types, which allow you to identify information about the folding and functioning of the nobility corporations and the ways of presenting them in society. Herbal images are analyzed as an integral part of the carrier on which they are placed, in combination with sources that arose during the folding and evolution of the corporation.
