The relationship between the capital and the provinces for centuries constituted one of the essential features of the relationship between the authorities and society. The collection presents articles based on the materials of the international scientific conference of the same name (Moscow, 2005) The authors examined a wide range of problems from the Middle Ages to the present day: the political, cultural and ideological role of the capital centers of the X-XVII centuries, the formation of bourgeois nations in the 19th century, the role of the capital and provincial intelligentsia in the formation of a market economy, the formation of civil society structures, the development National self -awareness of peoples, the historical role and today"s place in Moscow, Warsaw and other cities in developing relationships and in cooperation of Russia and Poland.
