On October 10, 1941, the 3rd Panzer group of the Wehrmacht and the 9th Field Army, trying to surround the troops of the right wing of the Western Front of the Red Army and enter the rear of the North-Western Front, began an offensive on Kalinin. On October 17, 1941, German troops occupied Kalinin.

The liberation of Kalinin was the result of a fierce twelve -day battle in December 1941. In this operation, there were no raids of tank brigades, oncoming battles of mobile formations and the struggle for an airfield node with the massive use of aviation. The December battle for Kalinin once again showed that war is, first of all, hard work.
