The “Baltic problem” of the late 1930s-the mid-40s is very contradictory in the professional environment and in the broad layers of society both in Russia and in the Baltic states. Tragic, mythologized and, alas, in many respects taboo pages of pre -war and military history need to be read, based on the study of the original sources. The monograph by Yu. Z. Kantor used unique documents from the archives of Russia, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. They (coupled with the latest studies of Russian and Baltic scientists) make it possible to reconstruct the picture of what was happening in this region in 1939-1945
