On June 22, 1941, the Red Army won its first victory in the Great Patriotic War - the assault on the Brest Fortress, on the capture of which the German command allocated a few hours, ended with a complete failure and large losses of the 45th Wehrmacht division. Despite the surprise of the attack and the loss of the troops at the very beginning of the battle, the Red Army showed the miracles of spontaneous self -organization, providing the enemy with desperate resistance. It took the Germans to break it for more than a week, but certain groups of defenders held on until the end of July, and the last fighters continued to fight until the fall of 1941.
