The monograph is devoted to the problems of understanding symbols in legal science and considering their place in positive law. An attempt was made to comprehensive analysis and delimitation of non-identifying approaches to understanding these symbols, an institutional-legal approach was applied, within the framework of which they are considered an independent object of legal relations, as a intersectoral legal institution. The conclusions made can be useful both for the development of exercises about symbols in law (special attention is paid to the expansion of the historiographic boundaries of these teachings), and for the improvement of legislation governing social relations related to the establishment, use and protection of symbols. Based on the results of the study, during which gaps of legal regulation were identified, the author offers options for solving pressing issues. In particular, notes the need to further understand legal symbols in the framework of special legal discipline "Legal Symbolism" and offers its structure.
