In this book, the anthropologist and historian Douglas Rogers tells the history of Russian oil on the example of the Ural region, namely the Perm Territory. Clearing the history of Perm oil since 1929, when the world"s first “socialist” oil was discovered, and until the 2000s, with their cultural policy based on vast oil reserves, the author covers the role of oil in the modern world in a new way. Particular attention is paid to the very nature of oil as a material substance and its role in the inner life and external relations of states and corporations, in the conditions of a socialist and capitalist economy. The book is based on extensive ethnographic research, interviews and archival documents of the Perm Territory
