The book of the outstanding Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen is dedicated to his expedition to 1912. On the sailing-motor yacht "Veslekhlem" along the shores of Spitsbergen. In Russian, the book was published in 1938 at the publishing house of the Glavsevmorput with the preface of the Soviet Oceanologist, Geophysics and researcher of the Arctic V.Yu. Viza.
In the description of swimming to Spitsbergen, Nansen appears before the reader audience not only as a scientist, equally well oriented in matters of oceanography, hydrobiology, geomorphology and a number of other disciplines, but at the same time as an outstanding writer and a talented artist. Most illustrations for this book were made by Nansen himself.
Each reader can find in the book what is interesting: colorful descriptions of nature, reflection on the causes of the disappearance of walruses and whales in the coastal waters of Spitsbergen, about changes in the climate of the archipelago, about the development of coal crooks, about the features of the geological structure, about various forms Svitsbergen surfaces. Nansen does not bypass the tragic fate of the German expedition of the Schrief-Steran and Russian expedition Rusanov, with whom he missed only a few days. If this meeting happened - and, perhaps, it would be possible to avoid the tragic outcome of these expeditions.
