The book sets out the history of the formation and development of special services and special units of Russia for thousands of years, starting with Rurik. It proves the negative impact of the periods of the turmoil, the weakening of the state and its institutions, multiple, often "surgical" reorganizations of special and law enforcement agencies. A special place in the book is occupied by the issue of ensuring the security of the state and its leaders. The authors trace the change in the goals, objectives and methods of work of special services at different stages, they show both achievements and the search for a solution to the problems that arose in the process of historical development. An analysis of historical material allows us to conclude: a professional culture has been laid for years, and is polished for decades to become a real school, without it, the effective functioning of complex power mechanisms is unthinkable.
