This book is the text of the candidate dissertation of the famous Kazan historian E. I. Chernyshev. It covers the problems of socio-economic and political development of the Kazan province in the pre-reform period, namely: the movement of the population, land ownership, the state of agriculture and industry, the crisis of the serf system, the revolutionary struggle of workers. The author introduces into scientific circulation a complex of historical sources that have not been emerging previously, analyzes them from the point of view of the Soviet scientific school.
