Under the "socialist reconstruction" (the term nominated by I.V. Stalin in November 1929) refers to the processes of radical restructuring of the economic sphere and the institutions associated with it in the USSR of the 1930s. The author considers a comprehensive problem that has presented a symbiosis of a number of topics - NEP, industrialization, collectivization, construction of socialism in Stalin, preparation for a large war. Reporting the key trends in the evolution of the modernization jerk, it distinguishes its two stages, at the first - the principles of the systematic use of resources actually continued, the content of the second was reduced to the next assault on socialism. The damage caused by the economic complex turned out to be significant and caused its extremely imbalance. Continuous collectivization did not justify the hopes for the flow of currency for industrialization. The main thing, the erroneous territorial organization of the military defense complex, expressed in the placement of enterprises for the production of military equipment and weapons mainly in the border areas, became an important cause of the disaster of the first period of the Great Patriotic War
