Smolensk has long played a special role in the military history of Russia, the first to accept the blows of aggressors who sought to capture Moscow. From July 10 to September 10, 1941, the Smolensk battle unfolded near the walls of the ancient city, in which, within two months, the Red Army was able to resist the invincible to this Wehrmacht. For the first time since the beginning of World War II, German troops were forced to move on to defense in their main direction. During the bloody defensive and offensive battles, the Soviet troops tore the Hitler Blitzkrieg and the plans of the German command for a non -stop attack on Moscow, and the Army Group Center suffered heavy losses. According to the Germans themselves, by the end of August, the motorized and tank divisions lost half of the personnel and material part, the total losses amounted to about half a million people. These figures speak for themselves: in the fire of the Smolensk battle, the Red Army gained experience, without which it was impossible to fight against the strongest army of the world.
