He conducted research in the field of Etruscology and Slavicism. The founder of the Chertkovsky library, chairman of the Moscow Society of History and Antiquities of Russian, one of the founders of the Moscow School of Arts. The Moscow provincial leader of the nobility, participant in the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829. Chertkov was engaged in the general Slavic history, looking for forgotten names and affairs of the Slavs in Greek, Roman and Byzantine sources. He saw traces of the first Slavs in Etruscans and the oldest Romans.
