In the work of the outstanding French medievist Jacques Le Goff, the problem of historical periodization is considered, which has not only a formal, but also substantial value: the transition to a new stage of development is accompanied by a denial of the values of the previous period. It is such ideological fractures that Le Goff considers system -forming: they allow you to draw borders between eras such as antiquity, the Middle Ages, and a new time.
