The originality of medieval Norway is the central theme of this volume. The book Edda and the Saga introduces the reader into the world of the ancient nosandinavian myth and epic. The focus is the interpretation of the heroes in the songs of Edda and in the sagas. Is it true that the heroes of Edda embodied examples of ideal behavior, fidelity and duty? How to explain the comic image of the gods in a number of songs Edda? What is the connection between Edda and the Sagams about the Icelanders - the most perfect prose genre of medieval European literature? These and other problems are considered in the book based on the study of the extensive circle of monuments of ancient Island writing.
In the monograph on the material of the monuments of law and literature of medieval Norway and Iceland, the problem of social relations in the era separates the reporting society from the society of early feudal. “Big Family” and its transformation, specific forms of land property, the originality of the Scandinavian community, a wide layer of free and exalting over it - all these issues are studied in two plans: what is the objective nature of the Norwegian society of the Viking era and what is the perception of social reality by the very members of this society , their social self -awareness, permeated with mythological ideas.
