In April 1876, an uprising broke out in Bulgaria, during the suppression of which Turkish troops committed mass killings of the civilian population, over 30 thousand people died.
The bloody reprisal stirred the whole of Europe. Charles Darwin, Oscar Wilde, Victor Hugo and Giuseppe Garibaldi spoke out in support of the Bulgarian. On April 24 (12), 1877, exhausting to the end of peace, Russia declared war on Turkey.
