The work of the archaeologist and ethnographer Mikhail Rabinovich is intended for connoisseurs of the exact fact. The author conducted tremendous surveys in the archives: he studied legislative acts, census books of cities, various estimates and consumables, private documents - diaries, notes, memoirs. At the same time, there were no annals, visual sources, archeology data. The result was a book in which any conclusion is backed by evidence of time and statistics. We see how the cities arose, what was their original layout and development, how their population was formed, what it did and earned a living. And also - what was the public and home life of the townspeople, what and how they taught children, how they celebrated the holidays, what rituals they celebrated, how they buried the dead, in what prisons they sat, in what baths werehed, what taverns visited ... before us, according to us essence, encyclopedia of the Russian medieval city
