At the beginning of the XX century. Persia (Iran) was in a state of deep decline. In 1905, the Shah gave the country the Constitution. But after his successor violated her, a civil war began in the country. To protect the life and property of their subjects and counteract the influence of England and Germany, the Russian Empire twice (in 1909 and in 1911) had to send limited military forces to Persia.
With the outbreak of World War I, the territory of Persia became an arena of a fierce struggle between the Turkish troops led by German advisers and the Russian expeditionary corps under the command of General N.N. Baratova.
