The monograph examines the history of the development and settlement of world Arctic, analyzes approaches to the study of demographic problems and the settlement of the Arctic territories, the features of the formation of the population and the specifics of its resettlement are considered, the differentiation of the Arctic territories in terms of population density and economic development. The author’s methodology for determining the supporting settlements is proposed, on its basis the classification of urban settlements is given by their compliance with the supporting. Local labor markets are examined in detail, their classification is given by types of economic activity. Considerable attention is paid to the migration of the population of the Russian Arctic, the main models and preferred migration routes were allocated. On the basis of the municipal index of human development, human development and prospects for the formation of the knowledge economy in the Russian Arctic are described.
