The book is dedicated to the evolution of Roman decorated armor in the era of the principle. This is the first large -scale study of Roman armor in Russian, which is the fruit of the twenty -year -old research of the author.
The study of ancient weapons and its decor in the light of modern approaches cannot be limited only to the consideration of the evolution of the weapon complex itself, but involves an appeal to such urgent general historical issues as ancient technologies, cross-cultural communications, value representations, ideology and religion of military personnel. Despite the rather significant number of special works devoted to this category of weapons, the studies are concentrated on a narrow group of objects, which are distinguished as used only in parades and in equestrian exercises. Other decorated Roman weapons remains out of close attention of researchers, due to which the decor of the Roman armor is not considered as an integral semantic system associated with the functional purpose of weapons and reflecting the ideology and value representations of the Roman military. However, only such a study of the Roman decorated armor allows us to clarify the chronology of archaeological monuments, to conduct a detailed comparison of preserved artifacts with iconographic materials and data from written sources, to identify the interaction and mutual influence of various ethnocultural traditions in the history of the Roman power.
Based on the study of archaeological finds, the semantics of the decor of armor and its connection with the religious and ideological aspects of the worldview of Roman military personnel, as well as technological aspects of the production of decorated weapons, were revealed.
All Roman decorated armor of the principle of the principle should be considered in the complex, since most of all the protective weapons were richly decorated, and also had a common circle of plots depicted on it, regardless of its purpose.
The decor of the armor of the principle of the principle was associated with the religious worldview of Roman troops. His iconographic world was extremely conservative and changed little during the I-III centuries. n. e. Its conservatism is confirmed by the stability of the images and the stylistics of their embodiment on the preserved decorated armor, created during the principle of the principle. The book is equipped with many color illustrations, as well as the illustrated catalog of finds, which takes into account all the well -known finds of Roman decorated armor at the beginning of 2018
