When in October 1517 Martin Luther attached his 95 abstracts to the door of the church of all saints in Wittenberg, he shook the foundations of Western Christianity. All dogmas, traditions and priorities were questioned ... Luther"s ideas about reforming religious doctrines and practices and the subsequent protests against the sale of indulgences split the church. But the reformation eventually went beyond the theological sphere, leading to the fact that the changes affected relations between the spiritual and secular power, the perception of the supernatural, the interpretation of the past, the understanding of the role of women in society and the church, as well as the clerical view of marriage and sex.
