Which began at the end of the XV century. The struggle for control of the Baltic directed directly affected the states of the Livonian Confederation, threatening the prospect of its further existence. Nevertheless, from the invasion of Livonia, it was protected by the position of the “crusader state”, which is protected by the Pope and the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. In order to expand their own influence in Livonia, the last lagellons resorted to the actualization of the ancient right of patronage over the Riga Archbishopric, which affirmed them in the status of protectors, which allowed them to intervene in the domestic policy of Livonia when maintaining the appearance of preserving their prerogatives. This political and legal concept has undergone a number of significant changes under its existence under the influence of the political situation that is relevant that time, in connection with which the history of its occurrence, analysis of its original content and subsequent transformation into relations of citizenship is an interesting problem
