On the eve of 1914, the princes of the Yusupov headed a list consisting of about a hundred names of the most noble and wealthy representatives of the Russian aristocracy. This study contains a comprehensive analysis of the economic and social status of this small, but preserved its political and cultural influence of the layer of largest land owners in recent decades of the existence of the Russian Empire.
The book tells about the problems of adaptation of the economy of the Russian landowning aristocracy in the context of the capitalist modernization of the period of 1890-1914, about the development of urban and rural manor complexes. Educational and professional preferences are considered, as well as some aspects of everyday life and social psychology of representatives of the noble elite. The author pays particular attention to the examination of the role of the aristocracy in the court life at the last Russian monarch, the relations of the Yusupovs and members of the imperial surname.
In the preparation of the book, a wide range of sources was used, including unpublished archival materials first introduced into scientific circulation.
