The book of research of the philologist, journalist and writer Alexander Matveevich Sharymov (1936–2003) is a collection of essays telling about the centuries-old history of the Lake Territory, more specifically about the history of the lands of halter, on which St. Petersburg was founded in 1703.
The collection is divided into two books: “The background of St. Petersburg” and “1703”. The first opens the outline of the history of the lake region - from the time of melting the glacier to the end of 1702. Then it follows a section that tells what the Neva River and her delta were represented by the time when the soldiers of Peter I came to their shores.
The content of the second book determined its general name - 1703. In the center of it is a study that a decisive difficult issue of the participation of Peter I in the foundation of St. Petersburg and the compilation of the initial design plan of the St. Petersburg fortress
