The monograph is devoted to a comprehensive study of the physical culture of the Byzantines and their sports practices in inextricable connection with the history of military affairs and the public life of the empire. The physical training of the military elite and the massive draft contingent, all types of spectacular sports, folk outdoor games are described. It is described about the associations of the fans - "parties of the hippodrome", the support of athletes by their fans, the rules for holding competitions and the rituals that accompanied them. The role of physical culture and sports was studied in strengthening the imperial power. The reader appears to be unlike his stereotypical image of Byzantium, in which the chanting of the crowd at the hippodrome sometimes drowned out church chants, the veneration of outstanding athletes overshadowed the honors given to the emperor, and the Vasilevs not only awarded the winners, but sometimes participated in the jumps in public as ordinary chariots.
