Professor of the history of the St. Petersburg (1844-1869) and Moscow (1869-74) universities, corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1848) In his scientific activity, he paid special attention to the history of Athens V-IV centuries BC. e., in particular the time of the formation and development of Athenian democracy
