The published monograph analyzes the complex nature of the patriotic upsurge in the Russian Empire, Great Britain and France in 1914-1915. Particular attention is paid to the study of the role of a national idea in the formation of collective values and identities of various groups of the population of the Entente. The author refutes the allegations that are common in modern foreign historiography about the “myth of 1914” and proves that the patriotic rise was not only short -term affectation or mass hysteria, but relied on a wide public consensus on the issue of war. At the same time, it was shown that the nature and boundaries of this consensus differed from the country to the country, largely predetermining the development of the domestic political situation in the countries of the Entente in subsequent years.
A number of previously not published sources are introduced into scientific circulation, including documents of the largest French and Russian archives. The monograph is illustrated by the rays of the First World War from the collection of the State Historical Public Library
