Of particular interest was the powerful ice cover, resting over Greenland, the thickness of which reaches 2000 meters or more. "Arctic Sahara" - called Greenland Adolf Eric Nordensheld. Travelers have tried to cross the ice shield since the end of the 18th century. And everything is unsuccessfully. The results of all expeditions in the inside of Greenland testified that the intersection of the ice cover from one edge to another is very large difficulties that seemed insurmountable to many. Nevertheless, this task was set by the 26-year-old keeper of the Bergen Museum Fridtjof Nansen. Nansen fulfilled his plan completely. He and his five comrades, in 1888-1889 he brilliantly coped with this task. Starting on the east coast, two months later he reached Gothhob on the western bank of the island.
