Ivan Ivanovich Sokolov (1865-1939)-an outstanding church historian, a brilliant representative of the domestic pre-revolutionary Byzantine studies, a noticeable church and political figure, professor of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy. He is the author of numerous works on Byzantinism and neo -Ellinism, which in the post -October period were undeservedly removed from the domestic historiography of Byzantium.
