The German historian and culturologist Aleid Assman is a leading researcher at the Politics of Memory of Europe in the second half of the 20th century. The book "oblivion of history - obsession with history" is a kind of trilogy dedicated to the memorial culture of the late modern. In "forms of oblivion," Assman describes the relationship between memory and amnesia in social, political and cultural contexts. In the second part of the trilogy ("1998 - between history and memory"), the author traces how Germany from oblivion of national history goes to obsession with a history concentrated around National Socialism. Finally, in the "History in Memory", Assman shows how pluralistic and conflicting approaches to the past within the framework of the “new historicism of the 21st century” come to replace the uniform national narrative of the 19th century. Individual biographies, family stories, novels, museum expositions, as well as memorial architecture and historical reconstruction of events acquire a special role in exacerbation of conflicts (between) generational memory.
